Mortal Kombat II vs Kill Bill: Can Karl Urban’s Sequel Beat Tarantino’s Martial Arts Icons?

Spread the love

Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol. 1 & 2 rewrote the rulebook for martial arts cinema, amassing a combined $333.1 million worldwide. Now, as Mortal Kombat II gears up for its May 8, 2026 release, Karl Urban’s rebooted warrior saga is charging into battle, eager to carve out its own box office legacy. With early projections lighting up trade portals, can MKII outshine Tarantino’s cult classics on the global scoreboard?

Box Office Benchmarks: Kill Bill & the Original Mortal Kombat

According to Box Office Mojo, Kill Bill: Vol. 1 pocketed $180.9 million globally, while Vol. 2 settled at $152.2 million. And let’s not forget the first Mortal Kombat film (1995) managed a respectable $122.2 million. That means the new sequel must smash at least $180.9 million to dethrone Vol. 1, or $152.2 million to top Vol. 2—and comfortably beat its own lineage.

Domestic Forecast for MKII

Industry experts at Box Office Pro are eyeing a $45–55 million opening weekend in North America. If Mortal Kombat II nails a midpoint $50 million launch, applying the 1.81x multiplier from the 2021 reboot (which turned $23.3 million into $42.3 million) could push its domestic tally to around $90–91 million—more than double the original reboot’s haul.

Global Prospects: East, West & Everything In Between

Mortal Kombat’s global fanbase—from Southeast Asia to Europe—could tip the scales. Strongholds like Australia, Latin America and parts of India have shown appetite for high-octane action franchises. If MKII translates its domestic momentum overseas, it stands a strong chance of eclipsing Kill Bill: Vol. 2’s $152.2 million global take. Catching Vol. 1’s higher mark won’t be easy, but not impossible with positive word-of-mouth and franchise loyalty.

What to Expect On Screen

Directed by Simon McQuoid, the sequel reunites Karl Urban as Johnny Cage alongside returning favorites and new warriors. Expect adrenaline-pumping battles against Shao Kahn’s forces, signature fatalities and an ensemble cast—Jessica McNamee, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks and Tati Gabrielle—delivering blockbuster thrills.

As Mortal Kombat II storms into theaters, the battle lines are drawn. Will Karl Urban’s martial arts extravaganza topple Tarantino’s formidable duology? Stay tuned: those opening weekend figures will tell the full story.
